At DHx, we run into a range of customers who are in the market for a learning management system. Some are brand new to the training industry. Many have been providing classroom training for years and are looking for a good way to save costs or to improve revenue by supplementing that training with on-line courses. And, others have been working with a different LMS–some built internally and some not–and are looking to upgrade.
In the last group, we are often amazed at how much customers have been putting up with, from reporting tools that require advanced technical knowledge to extremely complicated interfaces and brittle servers. We also find that many of these customers have developed elaborate manual processes to compensate for the limitations of their platform. A good example would be our customers who sell training and provide certification paths. We have found that no two certification programs are the same. Some require certain combinations of classes. Some require a combination of live classes, quizzes, and online coursework. Some require work to be done in unique time frames, etc. In these cases, we have found that part of the trouble our customers have had with previous systems is trying to manage a unique certification program in a rigid system.
